I like to challenge the common perception that external circumstances dictate our feelings. May I remind you, echoing the wisdom of Eleanor Roosevelt, that no one and nothing can make us feel inferior—or any other emotion—without our consent. Our interpretations of events, not the events themselves, paint our emotional experiences. This perspective shifts the power back to us, encouraging us to question and reframe our thoughts about situations that seem inherently negative or positive.

The STEAR Process: A Path to Emotional Mastery

The STEAR process (Situation, Thoughts, Emotion, Action, Result) is a practical tool for understanding and changing our emotional responses. By dissecting how our thoughts about a situation influence our feelings, which in turn shape our actions and outcomes, we gain insight into the cyclical nature of our experiences. I use the process in coaching frequently as it offers a roadmap for navigating our emotional worlds with intention and wisdom.

The 50/50 of Life

Perhaps one of the most liberating concepts I know is the acceptance of life's emotional 50/50 split. To live fully and authentically, we must embrace both the positive and negative aspects of our emotional experiences. This balance is not a flaw but a feature of the human condition, essential for growth and self-confidence. It's in this acceptance that we find the courage to face any emotion and, by extension, any situation life throws our way.

There is immense freedom and responsibility that come with recognizing we can choose our emotions. This is important for us to understand because this means we can change the way we think, what we tell ourselves on a daily basis, how our brains function and because of all of this, change the way we feel. Emotional Regulation Theory tells us that we have the ability to not only control our emotions - but to choose the emotions we want to feel at any given moment. This scientific backing reinforces the idea that not only is it possible to change our emotional patterns, but such transformation is supported by the very wiring of our brains. It’s a reminder that the journey toward emotional mastery is not just a spiritual or psychological endeavor but one rooted in the biology of our beings.
